In 1977, the Roberto Marinho Foundation was founded on the premise that communication can be a tool for social change. The foundation promotes the right to education, encourages leadership, and works to preserve the environment and cultural heritage of Brazil.

Through collaboration with a network of public and private partners, the foundation implements programs in diverse settings throughout Brazil.

Our Programs
Telecurso, which has been recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC, by its Portuguese acronym) is one of the foundation’s main achievements in the area of education. Seven million students have completed the Telecurso program, which has been adopted by ten states. The program Aprendiz Legal provides technical career training.

Roberto Marinho Foundation is committed to promoting culture by developing and creating museums and exhibitions. The foundation plays an active role in the cultural renaissance in Rio with the establishment of the Museum of Art of Rio (MAR), opened in 2013, the Museum of Tomorrow, opened in 2015, as well as the new Museum of Image and Sound on Copacabana Beach. The Soccer Museum and the Museum of the Portuguese Language, also initiatives of the foundation, are among the most visited in the countries.

Canal Futura, launched in 1997, is the fruit of the foundation’s experience in forging partnerships and employing audiovisual technology to facilitate education. Canal Futura is a TV channel that offers programming on social issues in the public interest. Programming is generated by partners in the private and third sectors and combines entertainment and information with a focus on social issues. Viewers are encouraged to get involved with programming and to apply the content in their daily lives.

Roberto Marinho Foundation’s work in environmental education focuses on sustainable management of natural resources and furthering the fields of science and technology. Towards this end it developed the Forestability program, and has supported the Young Scientist Award for over 30 years.

Mr. Marinho is the vice-president of the Globo Group and president of the Roberto Marinho Foundation. He earned his bachelor's degree in history at the Pontifícia Católica University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC−Rio) and a degree in geography from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
He began his career working as a reporter for the O Globo newspaper in 1972 In 1981, he became assistant editor, and from 1983 to 1984 he served as deputy chief editor. He then left the newspaper to become the programming director at the FM band of Globo Radio, where he would later become general director and then vice president.
In 1992, he founded the Acqua Institute which supports the conservation of water resources.
Mr. Marinho is the head of the Globo Group's social responsibility committee. He is a member of the governance committee of Together for sustainable development - Comunitas, the advisory board of WWF-Brazil, the Ethos Institute for Businesses and Social Responsability, the board of trustees of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra Foundation, and CEBDS, among others. In 2006, he helped found the Education for All movement (Todos pela Educação), where he is also a board member.

Graduated in Economic Sciences, with degree in Economic Engineering and Economic Development - 1º. Cycle - ISVE / Italy and MBA in Finance - IBMEC, Wilson Risolia was Secretary of Education of the State of Rio de Janeiro. He also held the positions of CEO of FALCONI Consultores de Resultados and Leader of FALCONI Educação and vice-president of Investment Funds of Caixa Econômica Federal. He is also a member of the Brazilian Academy of Education.

Gerente geral do Canal Futura. Historiador e Doutor em Educação. No campo da comunicação, trabalhou nas principais emissoras de televisão do Brasil como autor e diretor de programas e contribui com a Futura desde o surgimento do canal. Dentre seus principais trabalhos estão “Brasil Legal” (TV Globo) e “Teca na TV” (Futura). João Alegria também é Professor Adjunto do Departamento de Artes e Design da PUC-Rio, no curso de Design em Mídias Digitais.

Ms. Basto is the general manager of heritage and culture for the Roberto Marinho Foundation. She joined the foundation in 1996 and headed the techical department at IPHAN for 12 years. Ms. Basto, a native of Rio de Janeiro, earned a degree in architecture from Santa Úrsula University and an MBA from Coppead – Institute of Graduate Studies in Administration at UFRJ. She has a background in managing complex projects involving restoration, exhibitions, museum layout, as well as collaboration with culture and heritage agencies.

Ms. Marques has been the legal director at the Roberto Marinho Foundation since 2011, and served as manager of the department from 2002. She earned a bachelor's degree in law and has completed a graduate program in civil trial law at Candido Mendes University – Centro. She holds an MBA in economic and business law from FGV. Ms. Marques was a holdings lawyer at TVX Participações Ltda., in the area of mining regulation contracts, and a member of the Vanuza Sampaio Advogados Associados law firm, where she worked in civil and tax law, mainly in the area of oil regulation.

Mr. Carletto has been the director of planning at the Roberto Marinho Foundation since 2006. He holds a degree in metallurgical and materials engineering from UFRJ, and earned a PMP certificate from PMI. Before taking on his current position he spent seven years as planning and control manager. Mr. Carletto has also been an engineer at Vale do Rio Doce.

Mr. Bastos has been the diretor of technology at the Roberto Marinho Foundation since 2001. He plans and develops all aspects of technology for programs and processes at the foundation. He holds an electrical engineering degree from the Military Institute of Engineering (IME by its Portuguese acronym), has completed a graduate program in economic engineering and industrial administration at UFRJ, and earned a certificate in technology, operations and value chain management from MIT-Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

As director of institutional development at the Roberto Marinho Foundation, Ms. Pinto develops and maintains partnerships to support Canal Futura and special projects. She is also responsible for managing and contracting third-party assessments of project outcomes in the areas of education, culture, heritage, the environment and communications. Ms. Pinto was content manager for Canal Futura from the time of its creation, in 1997, until 2000. She holds a master's degree in education from PUC-RJ, and has completed a graduate course in contemporary history and culture, as well as the executive development program at the Dom Cabral Foundation. In addition, she was a consultant and director of teacher training for the Ministry of Education and TVE (Um Salto Para o Futuro). She has been an educational media consultant for SESC, TV Escola, and state and municipal secretariats of education throughout Brazil, among other institutions.
The members of the board of trustees are renknowned in the fields of culture, science, education and communications. In accordance with the by-laws of the Roberto Marinho Foundation, the board of trustees must maintain the reputation and foster the development of the foundation.
